We’re lucky to live in such exciting times for the solar industry. Residential use of solar power in the U.S. alone is up 70 percent from 2011. In fact — American homeowners, businesses and utility companies have installed enough photovoltaic cells to produce 3.2 gigawatts (or GW) of electricity. That’s incredible progress!
While this kind of growth calls for celebration — and blissfully, more solar for all — it comes with a heavy dose of caution for people interested in going solar.
Why? Because quality is starting to suffer. Solar’s swift rise in popularity combined with the dropping price of silicon are motivating a lot of the world’s photovoltaic panels manufacturers to produce large volumes of low-quality product. We here at RevoluSun feel that is unacceptable.
According an article citing Jenya Meydbray, CEO of solar reliability testing company PV Evolution Labs, many of the notable issues with current panels include the “degradation of the materials that hold the cells together and the yellowing of the back sheets and encapsulants. Some manufacturers are using less of the silicone material that attaches the junction boxes to the back of the panels, causing them to fall off and create fire hazards.”
With cheap, low quality products, it’s no wonder we’re all witnessing all kinds of so-called solar companies flooding the market. Most of these companies compete on price, incentivizing consumers with the lowest-cost (and therefore lowest-quality) solar panels available.
How we’re different and why it matters
Since day one, we here at RevoluSun have been committed to offering our customers the highest quality product and sales experience around. A big part of this ethos comes from our strong relationship with SunPower, one of the largest and most reputable PV panel manufacturers in the world.
A few days ago, Sunpower announced the sale of a massive solar development project to MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co, a company controlled by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. The $2-2.5 billion deal calls for the design, installation and construction of a 579-megawatt (MW) solar plant in California’s Antelope Valley.
Sunpower’s impressive deal with MidAmerican will be the world’s largest photovoltaic power development. It also represents a huge vote of confidence for the financial viability of SunPower and its customers, not to mention our shared commitment to excellent craftsmanship.
“The stamp of approval from a Buffett utility, combined with expected cashflow from the projects, will make SunPower more bankable and more creditworthy,” said SunPower CEO Tom Werner.
What this means for you
For starters — solar panels that last. One of SunPower’s greatest strength is their 20-25 year product warranty. Most other panels won’t last that long, and neither will the companies that make them.
You can also expect an intelligent and honest sales experience from RevoluSun.
Since we also work with a number of other reputable PV panel manufacturers directly, we’ll always offer the module that best fits your roof conditions and budget. If you have limited roof space or shading, for example, we’ll suggest SunPower. On the other hand, if you’ve got ample roof space, we’ll offer you a lower efficiency (and more affordable) module.
RevoluSun is proud to be a part of what we like to call the true frontier of solar — high value products backed by integrity and strong balance sheets. We want you to be proud of this, too.
Remember — saving a few dollars up front on a cheaper system might be nice in the short term, but you don’t want to be stuck with broken and potentially hazardous PV panels later on — not to mention that dreaded dependence on the grid.
