RevoluSun’s outreach arm provides more than $100,000 to date in resources, support and education for the community
RevoluSun today announced the creation of Project Empower, RevoluSun’s outreach arm that provides resources, support and education to non-profit and community groups. To date, RevoluSun has donated more than $100,000 to support the community, and Project Empower is the new, formal entity that will participate in community events, especially environmental and educational movements. Marian Kang in the legal department was promoted to Community Relations Coordinator to execute Project Empower initiatives.
“As the largest solar company in Hawaii and with offices in Massachusetts, community service is a responsibility that RevoluSun truly cares about,” said Eric Carlson, RevoluSun Principal. “It is a priority to empower the community, not only to understand and value renewable energy, but also to provide outreach and support to help each of the communities we serve live more enlightened, sustainable lives.”
In the past four years since its inception, RevoluSun has donated more than $100,000 to various Hawaii and Massachusetts non-profits. In 2011 RevoluSun designed and installed off-grid solar PV systems on Habitat for Humanity homes on Molokai. Last year, through its own project developers and staff, RevoluSun raised $1,500 to purchase a WE CARE Solar Suitcase for the Aloha Medical Mission, a non-profit that sends teams of doctors and nurses to help people in medically underserved countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Other outreach includes:
• Annual participation in the Sandy Beach cleanup with Surfrider Foundation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)
• Team Hawaii Women’s paddling crew title sponsor (2011, 2012, 2013)
• Big Brothers & Big Sisters “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” sponsor (2011)
• Kamehameha Schools high school science project donation (2011)
• Aina Haina “Adopt-A-School” participant (2011)
• Susan G. Komen’s “Race for the Cure” sponsor (2011)
• Hawaii State Science Fair, `Aha Punana Leo, sponsor (2010)
• Official solar sponsor for the Kokua Festival (2010)
“We are committed to cleaning up the community through beach cleanups and other environmental contributions and also seek to educate the community about renewable energy,” said Marian Kang, RevoluSun Community Relations Coordinator. “We want to empower the next generation with solar knowledge by going to schools. Our presentation curriculum reinforces math, sciences and critical thinking skills in order to encourage kids to be the innovative leaders of our future. The overall goal of Project Empower is to strengthen our community through capability and collaboration.”
Throughout 2012 and 2013 RevoluSun has worked on renewable energy education with a number of schools and groups including Aina Haina Elementary, Aiea Middle School, and the Honolulu Waldorf School and Kamehameha Schools in 2012 and Ala Wai Elementary, Punahou School, Iolani School, Hanahou’oli School, Kaimuki High School and Unity School in 2013. RevoluSun also participated in Bishop Museum’s “Science Alive!” this year.
RevoluSun’s free school presentation and solar curriculum can be customized to any grade level. Students learn about the sun, where electricity comes from, differentiate between renewable and non-renewable forms of energy, and how much energy one solar panel can produce. They then locate their home on the sun zone map and learn how to calculate peak sun hours for their neighborhood, how to calculate average daily energy use, using a sample electric bill, and what the solar system size and number of panels needed for their home would be. Upon learning to design their own solar electric system, students enjoy outdoor projects that involve light sensitive paper creations and solar grasshoppers in a baking tin.
