Eton Rukus Portable Bluetooth Solar Powered Wireless Speaker
I’ve always been dubious about solar powered gifts and gadgets. Can such a small solar panel adequately charge anything useful? Are solar powered gadgets actually practical or simply marketing ploys?
While I can’t speak for all solar gadgets, I was pleasantly surprised by one in particular. It was a fluke – I won it at a work function. And I’m really glad I did.
The device is Eton’s Rukus Portable Solar Powered Speaker. It’s light (3.5 lbs), easy to transport, durable, and plays music for a long time with minimal charge time.
It made me think – what other handy solar gadgets are out there?
A few notes on the Rukus: If you want pristine sound and thumping base at the beach, this is not the speaker for you – the sound quality is good, but not as good as Bose speakers of similar size. It’s more suited for the casual music listener that wants a no-fuss speaker with long battery life and the potential to last a weekend without an AC outlet.
Bluetooth. No wires! Works great with my phone and computer.
Long battery life – I’ve yet to run out of juice before finding the sun or an outlet. Stated battery life is 8 hours. I haven’t time this, but it seems true. If using it while in the sun, I doubt you’d ever run out of charge.
Quick battery charge – Fully charged within one hour of AC charging or six hours in the sun.
Portable/durable – Brought it along for a weekend of beach camping and it still works like a charm. One piece with a built-in handle and pouch for a phone/ipod.
While still a bit dubious, I’m more likely to give others a try after a great experience with the Eton Rukus. If anyone out there has other solar gadgets to recommend, let me know! Curious to try others.
