RevoluSun, Hawaii’s leading provider of residential and commercial solar energy systems, announced today the completed installation of a 155 kW PV system atop a new Liliha Square Shopping Center carport. The covered parking solar array on the corner of Vineyard and Liliha signifies a growing trend amongst Honolulu commercial property owners to use their parking structures and lots as a means to lower their electricity bills.
“There were initially very few of these types of systems in Honolulu, but now business owners are seeing the top space of their parking structures and uncovered parking lots as a savvy way to lower utility overhead,” says RevoluSun Principal Eric Carlson. “RevoluSun’s partnership with American Piping & Boiler, a locally owned mechanical contractor in Hawaii since 1965, helps our expert technicians to design custom systems that will best utilize the space each unique parking structure and parking lot have to offer.”
In some cases, the solar systems can even provide shade to an uncovered structure, as RevoluSun did for the AIPA (Airport Industrial Park Associates) building on Koapaka Street. The 280 kW system that went live in 2013 created a shaded, waterproof roof for the top level of the uncovered parking structure. RevoluSun’s 108 kW system installed on top of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children last year also creates shade for the top level of the hospital’s brand-new, uncovered parking structure. In addition, RevoluSun installed a system for the parking structure located at the HECO Ward Avenue Charging Station in 2011. The charging station has a nine-panel PV array with a battery storage system.
“Essentially, business owners are killing three birds with one stone,” Carlson explains, “by creating shade from the hot Hawaiian sun— and in some cases, a waterproof roof from our frequent Hawaiian drizzles; the solar panels generate clean, renewable electricity; and saves the owner money on their electric bills.”
