Solar company raises $3,200 to help medically underserved countries
HONOLULU — RevoluSun, Hawaii’s premier solar company, is embarking on its third year of contributing to a global community project that is changing and saving lives. RevoluSun project developers and staff recently raised $3,200 to purchase two WE CARE Solar Suitcases for the Aloha Medical Mission, a Hawaii non-profit that sends teams of doctors and nurses to help people in medically underserved countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The success of the first suitcase we donated inspired us to fundraise again to donate another suitcase the following year, and this year we are happy to have raised enough funds to donate two solar suitcases,” said RevoluSun Chief Innovation Officer Eric Carlson. “Everyone at RevoluSun believes in solar technology so strongly that it is an honor for us to see it used to save and improve lives around the world.”
RevoluSun’s project developers and staff twice raised $1,500 to purchase a WE CARE Solar Suitcase for the Aloha Medical Mission in 2012 and 2013, which made this device available to two rural health clinics in Nepal that suffer from a lack of reliable electricity. The Solar Suitcase is a portable solar power unit that provides doctors and other healthcare workers with medical lighting and power for mobile communication, computers and medical devices, and can be used for a range of medical and humanitarian settings.
When Aloha Medical Mission President Dr. Bradley Wong visited a Lehan, Nepal health clinic in 2012—one of thousands of rural health clinics that suffer from a lack of reliable electricity— to see patients and give the clinic the solar suitcase, it was the first ever to be installed in Nepal. Even when these clinics do have electricity, their light sources are dismal. The solar suitcase immediately had a major impact on the function of the health clinic. The light was used in the emergency room at night, which sees 15 patients a day, and to provide light in the delivery room, which has 14 births per month.
“Since inception of this project, RevoluSun has donated four of the nine suitcases that we have taken to Nepal,” said Aloha Medical Mission President Dr. Bradley Wong. “It’s a big contribution, and really shows what a global community solar can be, especially when companies like RevoluSun use their leadership to make a difference.”
Aloha Medical Mission is returning to Nepal on October 21, 2015 and will gift two WE CARE Solar Suitcases from RevoluSun to rural health clinics. Dr. Wong and his team will stay for 20 days in order to perform general surgery, gynecology procedures, burn corrections and also distribute artificial hands to amputee patients.
