Month-long art gallery display generates nearly $2,000 for nonprofit
HONOLULU — RevoluSun Smart Home, Hawaii’s premier solar and Smart Home solutions provider, helped local artists raise nearly $2,000 for Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii with a month-long art gallery showing last month.
The art installation at RevoluSun Smart Home’s Innovation Center showroom featured artists Shannon McCarthy, who uses microplastics from beach cleanups to create brilliant mosaics; Mark Cunningham, whose creations are from manmade objects he finds forgotten on the ocean floor; and other sustainably minded local artists Aaron Char, “Manny Aloha” Pangilinan, Jeff Hawe and Eduardo Bolioli. Each artist was able to sell their art throughout the month of April and then donated a portion of the total art sales to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.
“Working with community organizations toward the big picture of less waste and more sustainability is the core of our company,” said Eric Carlson, Chief Innovation Officer of RevoluSun Smart Home. “We are a gathering space for people to educate themselves on sustainable home technology, so as we evolve, we want to support community organizations with our same values. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii successfully lobbies for legislative changes through quantifying what they collect at their beach cleanups. We want to see more of that.”
Since its inception in 2011, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii has used data from beach cleanups to quantify how many plastic bags and cigarette butts it has picked up from the shoreline. This was the catalyst for the Oahu smoking ban, Maui tobacco ban, statewide smoking ban, and Oahu plastic bag ban. In the past four years, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii hosted 59 cleanups throughout the state, removing over 135,000 pounds of debris with the help of more than 13,000 volunteers. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii leads the world in marine debris recycling with over 38,000 pounds recycled.
“Raising awareness to plastic pollution needs to be accomplished through a multitude of angles,” said Kahi Pacarro, Executive Director of Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. “We can’t rely on just beach cleanups, government legislation, or the next generation. That’s why this partnership to raise awareness to a broader audience through art represented another way to get the word out about our over-consumption of plastics. We found it to be an amazing partnership that not only raised awareness; it also raised much-needed funds for our organization. We’d do it again in a heartbeat. Many thanks to all involved with the art show, especially RevoluSun Smart Home for the opportunity.”
Located at 210 Ward Ave., the Innovation Center features RevoluSun Smart Home’s curated collection of products, which include cooling whole house fans, natural lighting solutions, PV hot water heaters, home automation and security systems, and solar battery storage. RSH has presented free educational seminars to the public since the company’s beginning in 2009. RSH’s goal is to educate the public on ways to harness indigenous power and utilize energy-efficient home technology for a cleaner, smarter Hawaii.
