How it Works

Long-Lasting Power

With any battery system, the capacity slowly begins to diminish year after year. The Tesla Powerwall’s 10-year warranty guarantees that your storage capacity will remain above 70% for the first ten years, lending a sense of security to anyone investing in energy storage.

Unlike older models of battery storage, the Lithium-Ion battery cells can be fully discharged to 0% without risking battery damage.

Programs and Incentives to Reduce Costs

Battery storage in Hawaii gives you access to several programs and incentives which can help to reduce your overall energy costs. In accordance with Hawaii’s goal to use 100% clean energy by the year 2045, the following programs have been put in place to subsidize your solar battery installation:

Home Battery Rewards Program

The Home Battery Rewards program offers direct, monthly incentives to offset your energy costs when you incorporate a Tesla Powerwall into solar systems in Hawaii. A single Powerwall will provide you with a $35 to $60 monthly incentive on your power bill, and the incentive increases for up to three Powerwalls.

This incentive is applied directly to your energy bill each month. If your electric costs are less than the incentive amount, the Hawaiian Electric Company will send you a check for the difference.

The Home Battery Rewards program started on June 7th, 2021. Incentives will continue to be applied up until June 7th, 2026, which can substantially reduce the cost of your energy bank installation. In return for these incentive payments, all you need to do is agree to have your battery storage available to the grid in case of high energy demands.

Battery Bonus

The Battery Bonus program offers a lump-sum payment for those who install energy storage in Hawaii as part of a solar system and agree to provide power to the grid.

After installing your system and having it checked, the program asks participants to make their stored energy available for 2 hours during the day every day until December 21st, 2023.

The amount of the payment depends upon how much energy you provide during those two hours and falls into three tiers:

• 850/kW for those accepted in the first 15MW
• $750/kW for those accepted in the next 15MW
• $500/kW for those accepted for the final 20MW

This program was put in place to provide 50MW of renewable energy for the grid and encourage the adoption of energy storage in residential or commercial applications. Applications for the Battery Bonus program will be accepted until June 20, 2023, or until the 50MW cap has been reached.
