Surprisingly, your system can still produce a lot of electricity during cloudy or rainy days. The key factor is that UV rays still penetrate the clouds, rain and snow and continue to produce electricity for your home. Although there is some production loss, it will not affect the long-term production estimates for your system.
For Net Metered solar systems your system will NOT continue to produce power if the electricity goes out. In order to protect the utility company’s workers that may be servicing the power lines in the event of an outage, the system will automatically shut off, only to power back up when service is restored.
For systems under the self supply program, your solar array will still produce power, sending it to your battery for home consumption.
If you have monitoring services with your system, you can check on your system at any time via your monitoring provider. Visit the SunPower or Enphase sites to monitor your energy production. The monitoring lets us know what is being produced, and that system in no way affects the PV production. Your monitoring system gathers the data from your PV system, and sends it to the servers at your PV’s producer’s company.

The utility generally applies a minimum charge for their service of between $15 and $20, depending on a few different variables. On the months when you use more electricity than normal, your utility will provide you with any extra kilowatt hours you need, and usually the extra credits you had in the bank (Net Energy Metering) will offset this extra usage. As an added benefit, homes under the self supply program can be setup to provide emergency backup power during a grid outage.
1. Your PV panels will produce energy throughout the day.
2. The energy that is produced will be used to power your home.
3. Any extra energy that your home doesn’t utilize will then be sent to the grid. That energy is stored up in your account as credits that you can use at a later time.
4. If the energy needs in your home are greater than your production, you will pull energy from the grid.
