HECO Bring Your Own Device +
Get Paid to Power Your Home or Business with Battery Storage
BYOD+ has upfront incentives for batteries
HECO’s new BYOD+ program offers huge upfront incentives to install battery storage
BYOD+ offers an upfront incentive of $2,000 per battery. For households that qualify as Low to Moderate Income (LMI), the incentive doubles to $4,000 per battery. In addition to the upfront rebate, energy dispatched during the 6–8 PM window (the dispatch period) earns credit at the full retail rate — currently around $0.42* per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

What is BYOD+?
Hawaiian Electric’s Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD+) program pays homeowners with battery storage systems to send energy to the grid during peak evening hours (6–8 PM). You’ll get a generous upfront incentive and retail rate for the energy you export.
Example: Oahu home with 2 Batteries
How Much Can Homeowners Earn?
LMI Households:
Up to $8,000* Upfront Rebate
For qualifying low-to-moderate income households committing 10 kW of battery capacity.
Non-LMI Households:
Up to $4,000* Upfront Rebate
Available for households committing 10 kW of battery capacity.

Who’s Eligible for BYOD+?
For LMI Eligibility:
- You are installing a battery + solar system
- You can commit to discharging energy 6–8 PM daily
- Your household income is below 140% AMI (for LMI bonus)
For Non-LMI Eligibility:
- You are installing a battery + solar system
- You can commit to discharging energy 6–8 PM daily

Pick Your Back Up Power Level! You can choose how much of your battery to commit to the program — from 1 to 5 kW per battery.
Committing less means you’ll keep more stored energy to power your home during an outage. It’s a balance between maximizing your incentive and keeping some backup for peace of mind.
Hawaiian Electric pays you an upfront incentive of $2,000 per battery. The upfront incentive doubles to $4,000 per battery For households that qualify as Low to Moderate Income (LMI). In addition to the upfront rebate, energy dispatched during the 6–8 PM window will be credited at the full retail rate.
When you join BYOD+, you’re not just saving money — you’re part of something bigger. Every evening from 6–8 PM, the demand for electricity spikes as homes and businesses power up. Traditionally, this demand has been met by firing up fossil fuel plants.
By installing a battery and dispatching clean energy during this critical window, you help stabilize the grid and reduce the need for dirty, expensive power. The more homes that participate, the more we rely on solar — not smoke stacks.
Your battery becomes a cleaner, smarter power plant — and you get paid to help Hawaii reach 100% renewable energy.
How It Works (3 Steps)
You must stay enrolled for 5 years. If you leave early, part of your incentive may need to be repaid.

Enroll Your Battery
By enrolling, you agree to let Hawaiian Electric access your battery during peak demand hours. Your battery is still yours — but you opt in to share stored energy when the grid needs support most, like during high evening usage or emergencies.
