3G Phase Out - RevoluSun

3G Phase Out

3G Phase Out

As you may know, cellular providers are phasing out 3G technology in favor of 4G. Once this occurs, your inverter’s existing 3G modem will stop communicating monitoring data with SolarEdge’s servers until a 4G modem is installed. While system monitoring via the SolarEdge app will be temporarily lost.

The sunsetting of all these 3G devices are outside our control, but we have teamed up with SolarEdge Technologies as its authorized installer to make your replacement as easy—and affordable—as possible.

YOUR PV SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE ENERGY NORMALLY.

There are two options for you to upgrade:

click on an option to expand details.

1. WiFi Zigbee $400 (5-year product warranty)

  • Plugs into your home and router
  • Connects a SolarEdge device to the monitoring platform via Wi-Fi
  • Connects a SolarEdge device to smart energy products via ZigBee* communications

2. 4G Modem $500 (5-year data plan)

  • the remaining time on your existing data plan can be carried over to the new data plan
  • Monitoring that uses cellular is often a good option for homes that have tenants (monitoring would not be dependent on tenant’s internet router)
  • Monitoring that uses cellular to communicate may be a good option for homes that do not have stable or wide range internet

FAQs

click on your question to view the answer.

1. How do I get a replacement 4G modem installed for my solar system?

Register with Revolusun for one of two options, upgrade to: 1. 4G modem from solaredge or 2. WiFi Zigbee wireless Gateway

2. When can I expect to be upgraded?

Modem availability is limited and fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to ongoing supply limitations, we’re expecting a 14-16 week lead time on your equipment. The sooner you reserve your modem, the sooner it will arrive.

3. What is the cost to upgrade?

The cost of switching to WiFi is $400 (5 Year product warranty) and the cost for a 4G Modem $500 (5-year data plan)

4. What are the pros and cons of a WiFi vs. 4G upgrade?

WiFi Zigbee (5-year product warranty)

  • Plugs into your home and router
  • Connects a SolarEdge device to the monitoring platform via Wi-Fi
  • Connects a SolarEdge device to smart energy products via ZigBee* communications

5. Can I self-install the 4G modem upgrade?

We do not recommend installing the modem yourself.

6. What If I choose not to upgrade to a 4G modem or Wi-Fi?

Without online access to your PV System via the SolarEdge app, you will have to rely on the inverter’s indicator light to confirm your PV system is producing. If the green light is on, it means your system is generating electricity. Without replacing 3G it with a 4G version, or switch to wifi your solar panels will no longer be able to communicate their data. Meaning, you will not be able to see the electricity output from the panels or monitor the system’s total production.

There are many benefits of monitoring solar panels and battery performance. For instance, you can monitor panels to see if there is a decrease in energy production, indicating an issue with a panel. Or, you can see how much electricity is going to your solar battery for night use. Once the 3G network is down, you are closed out from monitoring your solar system performance.
